Our All-Abilities Sports Day Adventure

Over the weekend, my son and I had the most incredible experience at an all-abilities sports day. It was a day filled with excitement, challenges, and—most importantly—so much fun! As a parent of a special needs child, finding inclusive activities where he can participate fully and feel confident can sometimes be tricky, but this event was a game-changer.

From the moment we arrived, the energy was infectious. Volunteers and coaches were ready to support, encourage, and adapt activities so that every child, regardless of their abilities, could give it a go. My son was a little hesitant at first, but once he saw the range of sports on offer, he was all in!

Trying New Sports—And Loving It!

One of the biggest highlights of the day was wheelchair basketball. At first, my son wasn’t sure about maneuvering the chair, but after a bit of practice, he was zooming around the court, determined to make a shot. The look of pride on his face when he finally got the ball through the hoop? Absolutely priceless.

Then came rock climbing—something I wasn’t sure he would attempt. But with the encouragement of the amazing volunteers, he strapped on a harness, took a deep breath, and started climbing. Every step up the wall was a victory, and watching him reach a height he never thought possible was an emotional moment for both of us.

He also had a go at a few other sports, from modified athletics to cricket, and each one brought a new level of excitement. The best part? There was no pressure—just a celebration of effort, determination, and pure enjoyment.

More Than Just Sports

What made this day so special wasn’t just the activities—it was the sense of inclusion, encouragement, and support from everyone involved. Seeing kids of all abilities laughing, cheering each other on, and pushing their own limits was truly inspiring. My son left the event feeling empowered, confident, and eager to try more new things in the future.

These kinds of events are so important for children with special needs. They give them opportunities to step outside their comfort zones in a safe and welcoming environment. And as a parent, there’s nothing better than seeing your child experience the joy of sport without barriers.

We’ll definitely be back next year!
