The Time I Held a Python – Facing My Fear of Snakes

There are moments in life that make your heart race, your palms sweat, and your mind scream, “What have I gotten myself into?” For me, that moment was the day I held a python—even though I was absolutely terrified.

Facing My Fear of Snakes

It all happened during a trip where I had the chance to get up close and personal with some incredible wildlife. I’ve always admired snakes from a safe distance—watching them slither behind glass, fascinated by their smooth scales and graceful movements.

But admiring from afar is one thing. Having a massive python draped across your shoulders? That’s a whole new level of fear.

Holding a Python for the First Time

The handler assured me the snake was completely safe, well-fed, and used to being handled by people. Still, when that thick, muscular body was placed in my hands, I felt a rush of panic.

The weight shocked me—it was far heavier than I expected. Its skin wasn’t slimy or gross like I’d imagined; instead, it was smooth, dry, and cool to the touch.

As it shifted slowly, tightening just enough to feel secure, every instinct screamed at me to flinch or run. But I forced myself to stay calm.

From Fear to Fascination

Something surprising happened in those tense moments. With each passing second, my fear started to fade. The python wasn’t interested in me—it wasn’t hunting, and it wasn’t dangerous in that moment. It was simply existing, calmly exploring the world with flicks of its tongue.

Instead of fear, I began to feel fascination and even admiration. I realised this python was an incredible creature, powerful yet gentle in its own way.

The Lesson I Learned

Would I hold a python again? Maybe. It was nerve-wracking, but also exhilarating. More importantly, it taught me that stepping outside my comfort zone can transform fear into respect and even wonder.

I’ll never forget the day I held a python—even though I was scared.
