The Reality of Being a Single Mum: A One-Woman Show

Being a single mum is like running a 24/7 business where you are the CEO, accountant, chef, cleaner, nurse, referee, therapist, and chauffeur—all unpaid, of course. You never clock out, there’s no annual leave, and “sick days” are a laughable concept.

On Call, Always

Remember those pre-kid days when you could just lie in bed, binge-watch TV, and ignore your phone? Yeah, me neither. As a single mum, you’re permanently on call. Got a kid with a mysterious rash at 2 AM? Congratulations, you’re now a dermatologist. School project due tomorrow? Hope you’re skilled in last-minute crafts. Toilet blocked with an entire roll of paper? Grab those rubber gloves, because guess who’s the plumber?

Master Chef (Whether You Like It or Not)

Meal planning? Ha! You’ll serve a nutritious, home-cooked dinner only for your child to declare they suddenly hate everything on the plate. One day, they love spaghetti; the next, it’s “gross.” But heaven forbid you forget to stock up on their favourite snack—because that will spark a meltdown of apocalyptic proportions.

Cleaning? More Like Damage Control

Cleaning with kids is like brushing your teeth while eating chocolate. You finally get the house looking decent, and within five minutes, someone has spilled juice, scattered LEGO everywhere, or decided to play hairdresser with an entire bottle of conditioner.

The Human First-Aid Kit

You’ve memorised the location of every Band-Aid, antiseptic, and ice pack in the house. Your child can barely remember where they left their school bag, but they will find you in seconds if they need a hug, a splinter removed, or a “magic kiss” to heal an imaginary injury.

The Unexpected Perks

Yes, it’s exhausting, and yes, sometimes you fantasise about a solo holiday where the only person calling your name is the waiter bringing your cocktail. But there’s something incredibly powerful about knowing you’re the glue that holds it all together. You’re showing your child resilience, strength, and unconditional love—all while running on coffee and sheer determination.

So, to every single mum out there juggling all the things: you’re doing an amazing job. And if no one has told you today—you’re a superhero (who probably deserves a nap).
