Homemade Crumbed Fish: Bringing the Taste of the Ocean to the Desert

Living in a place without a proper fish and chip shop is tough—especially when you’re craving that crispy, golden perfection you get near the ocean. While there are a couple of places that sell basic hot chips, they just don’t compare to the fresh, flaky fish and crunchy chips I used to enjoy by the seaside.

With no travel on the horizon, my longing for the coast was real. So, I did the next best thing: I taught myself how to make homemade crumbed fish—and wow, what a game-changer!

Why This Recipe is a Winner

✔️ Perfectly golden and crispy on the outside
✔️ Flaky, tender fish on the inside
✔️ Totally satisfying and family-approved

From start to finish, this meal takes about an hour—but it’s completely worth it. My family devours it, drizzled with fresh lemon juice from our tree and served with a side of chips. There are never any leftovers on fish and chips night!🍋🍟

I now make this fortnightly, and my teen has started learning the crumbing process (though he’s still a bit wary of the hot oil—fair enough!). I prefer cutting the fish into strips rather than leaving the fillets whole—it feels more like an authentic, no-cutlery-required fish and chips experience!
